The Pacific coast of Ecuador, known as the Coastal Region, consists of the following provinces listed from north to south: Esmeraldas, Manabi, Los Rios, Guayas and El Oro area of the Ecuadorian coast is 70,000 km2, less than a third of Ecuador's surface, but 50% of Ecuador's population live in this region. Most population is concentrated in the city of Guayaquil and its surroundings, Guayaquil is one of the three major cities of Ecuador and is also the main port.
The climate in this region varies from hot and arid in the peninsula of Santa Elena hot and humid in the plains and interiors between Esmeraldas and the Gulf of Guayaquil. The average temperature is 24° C (18º C to 30° C), the state's climate is influenced by the current El Niño (warm) and Humboldt (cold). |
